Sealing wax came from the East. Seafarers sailing ship "Victoria", which was part of the expedition of Magellan, including overseas curiosities brought from China to Spain wax - a special adhesive material, called "Spanish wax."

Initially, the wax was a rarity. Only a few craftsmen mastered the art of its production. But in the middle of the 16th century, Samuel Zimmerman, a resident of the German city of Augsburg, led recipe of red sealing wax in the book about the art of correspondence. During this period the wax had been applied for postal needs. The well-known wax seals came into use in Russia since the end of the XVII century.

At first, only diplomatic letters carefully were packed with wax seal; state secrets required compliance with the strictest secrecy. Gradually, and individuals began to use the printing of wax; a letter with the seal looked very solid and required serious consideration.

Color of wax meant a considerable importance. Each color print was used for a particular type of document. Documents for the granting of rights to anything were marked by green wax seals. International treaties were confirmed by red wax seal and yellow wax seal was used for assurance not so important documents. Simple letters were marked by gray wax seal. It is an interesting fact that you could buy the right to use the red wax seal, and only richest people could use this possibility. Color of wax seal was incredibly important. For example, in the British Parliament, even during the confrontation of the king nobody dared to certify international documents by red wax seal. It could be done only by the King.
